During the colder (and wetter) months mould can become an issue in rental properties. It is important that you report any signs of mould to your Landlord or Managing Agent in the first instance so that an assessment of the issue can be made and an appropriate course of action taken.
If you are a Tenant living in a rental property, there are some simple ways to prevent mould:
1. Ensure any extractor fans are working and vents and filters are clear.
2. Ensure any trickle vents on windows are kept open and if any air vents are present to walls do not cover them.
3. Keep windows open where possible, in particular during and after cooking or washing in the shower or bath.
4. Close the kitchen and bathroom doors when in use.
5. If windows have ‘security keeps’ fitted then windows should be be left in the ajar position and locked allowing air flow.
6. Put lids on pans when cooking to minimise steam escaping.
7. Dry washing outside where possible and do not leave hanging over radiators. Alternatively dry them in the bathroom with the doors closed and windows open.
8. Adequate heating – The World Health Organisation Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mould recommends keeping rooms between 18c – 20c. Having heating regularly on, even at a low temperature, helps to prevent damp and mould.
9. Use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber.
10. If black mould does appear use a product to clean it off regularly such as Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover.
